  1. Hello!

Problem: the blog entry's title is contradictionary, is it chapter nine or ten?

Good news: The new ARIA Festa di Gondola "action game" is now available as a restricted feature set demo version, download from here (32MB):

    http://www.melonbooks.com/contents/taiken/IT0000125263.lzh

Looks great and works OK on my WinXPSP3. Hope you start scanlating it to english, so that more people can enjoy it worldwide! I am trying to buy it on CD, I don't think it should be pirated.

  2. Man, that Oneechan is violent. And who is that guy, her twin brother?

  3. My monthly scan of Amanchu! <3
    Thanks ACS ! ;D

  4. The ARIA Festa di Gondola game demo has several restrictions. This is what I found so far, not necessarily accurate:

    - No primas, only Akari, Aika and Alice are available with their maroon gondolas.
    - Apparently only one canal circuit layout is provided, going around the Aria Company pierhouse.
    - The story-based game part is not provided, only the arcade mode module. Games run just two laps around the circuit.
    - Only two tracks of background music are provided, although you can replace them with anything you like as long as its in WAV format (uncompressed PCM audio).
    - Four-player mode is not provided.

    SINGLE player options available:

Mode 1: pure time count game. Collecting stars is only for replenishing fuel. As soon as the fuel meter goes up to red, you can engage afterburner mode with a separate button, gaining turbo speed and no obstacle collisions. Beware, afterburner mode has huge fuel combustion!

Mode 2: pure point collection mode, ramming stars give you both fuel and points, time doesn't matter.

Mode 3: point collection with internal etaps. Beware, you can run out of the 30-40 second section time allowances if you try to collect too many stars from multiple lanes.

PAIR player modes available: human vs human match or human vs CPU game can be selected

It has the above described three modes and a fourth mode, where the final score is determined from a balance of total time AND star collection points. (In Mode 3 two-player scenario the game stops as soon as the first human gondolier arrives at the finish line. Mode 4 lets both players finish, even if the second finisher is a computer avatar.)

  5. Why are so many people abusing this forum to advertise for that game?

Motormind: the Aria Festa di Gondola game is "doujin-shi", meaning its created by japanese enthusiasts in their spare time and they sell it at self-cost (150-210 yen or 2-3 US dollars). The only problem is how to postage the full-featured version overseas, as is only sold on CD-ROM?

We have been waiting for this game release like 9 months or so! Now that the Aria saga is over, what else new to expect? I am glad to see Aria is not dead in japan, just like I was glad to see Aria go on italian TV, even if the dub was of debatable quality.

I found the new "Aria Festa di Gondola" action game is much fun, even in its trial version form. You can make fun of the AI opponent, not very smart...

If you cannot handle LZH packages, here is the download in ZIP format, which Windows knows by default:

    http://www.mediafire.com/?y6fdj5jlf2d

( The download link is blue, it's beside the hard drive icon with the green arrow on the left. )

You may replace the racetrack background music "001.wav" with "005.wav" from the early game beta that was available on IPYO.net a good while ago. I think that's better.

I will try to get an actual gondolier give feedback about the trial version and see how to make it better.

In a few years I want to see 3 million dollar Konami Undine simulators in shopping mall arcades, complete with hydraulic moving 3D projection domes and HD quality virtual Venice video!

  7. Hmm...

This is the biggest job/joint effort I've seen at ACS so far - it's been TL'ed twice!

Thanks Zhukov for the RAWs and thanks to the TL'er impersonating a QC'er (Stagione :P), Basaka and Mez for QC'ing this text-spam of a chapter. It's the hardest job I've done yet.

  8. But I am totally not interested in computer games. I go on here since I am interested in works by Kozue Amano. And does it have to be mentioned in every thread? I am sure there must be better places to advertise that game.

If the majority on here disagrees: excuse me. But I just find it a bit annoying.

    ReplyDelete
  9. > But I am totally not interested in computer games. <

Actually there were two official Aria computer games published for the Playstation 2 and a third one is hitting the shelves next month I think?

Games are an integral part of the ARIA pranchise. If I remember correctly Ms. Amano wrote in some Monogusa Club addition that she plays computer games herself.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I certainly don't mind people using this blog as an ARIA community gathering point for any kind of related discussions. Despite how messy and inconvenient a blog comment system is.

    ReplyDelete
  11. >TL'er impersonating a QC'er (Stagione :P)

    I do a bit of everything :P

  12. Iooooo. Thanks for More Kozue goodness =DDD

  13. What? There'll be a third Aria VN?

    ReplyDelete
  14. Solais: It's called "Aria the Origination: Aoi Wakusei no El Cielo", made by the Alchemist company for the Sony Playstation 2.

Why PS2 I don't know, when PS3 has been out for about 3 years or so?

    ReplyDelete
  15. That Origination VN has been out for over a year! I've had a go at it on my PS2.

    ReplyDelete
  16. That one's been out. You sure it's not the "alchemist best" version?

    ReplyDelete
  17. In page 84 Katori Mato says: "although diving is not an intense sport..."

Are you sure that is the correct translation?

I mean in the military underwater troops are elite of the elite, only 1 in 500 gets approved (1 in 200 for fighter pilots).

Be able to carry all that cumbersome equipment, hold your breath for several minutes, be able to free yourself with knife or bare hand if you get entangled, fight off beasts, swim for your life, rescue your mate if needed, all that against the tremendous drag of water to any movement, blahblah.

I do think it needs better fitness than football or soccer for example.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Ain't the "alchemist best" just a re-release?

    ReplyDelete
  19. @Anon whoever: I'm sure they don't expect you to do that in recreational diving. 8D

    ReplyDelete
  20. The literal translation is "While diving isn't a hard [fitness-wise] sport", which I changed to 'intense' to be able to convey the context.

While I had to lug around equipment during my stint at PADI Open Water diving, it wasn't for long distances and once in the water, the stuff becomes weightless. I found the constant stop-sprint of Football (Soccer) fire more tiring that relax-swimming (they teach you relax) in the water.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Inthernet: I see, the girls don't need much fitness, because Ms. Amano is not planning to pitch Ooki and Oikari against tenctacled sea-monsters at all, they won't dive inside rusty shipwrecks with the resulting emergency situations and they won't battle the scubas of evil Black Moon organization.

Ok, what is Amanchu! about then? If one wants to see pretty fishes, one can go to the aquarium instead of the manga shop. Will it be about panty humor like the last two chapters?

I'm afraid the sea in its barren natural reality is a rather uninteresting place to base an entire story(less) arc on it. The quickly deepening waters around Japan are nothing like the Red Sea or Taormina or whatever southern pacific earthly paradise.

    ReplyDelete
  22. @Anon: Well, if one wanted to see the sea, one could simply go to the beach instead of reading ARIA. The manga is not so much about diving itself, but just the daily humour and how the characters interact withe each other. Take it easy and enjoy the smaller things in life. And besides, isn't it much better to see the fish in their natural habitat instead of in a glass tank? Not everyone can afford a thousand dollars to take scuba lessons and go diving in Australia or something.

  23. I think chapter 10 should be re-translated, because onee-chan sounds silly. Why not simply use "big sister" for english?

    ReplyDelete
  24. @Anon: Because we agreed that "big sister" sounds silly.

    ReplyDelete
  25. In some cases, it's better to use "onee-chan" as it is an honourific, which is what he was using most of the time. The times when he uses it to address someone else that she's his older sister, will be TLed as "older sister".

  28. I really love making crucial typos...

In the manga, she is called "Ane-san" which threw me off in my initial translation because in my gut feeling, that has slightly less love versus "Onee-chan". Is there a way to express this in an understandable and non-awkward way in English though?

"Ane-san" and "Onee-chan" does share the same Kanji.

Seeing how manga/anime fans are familiar with the term "Onee-chan", and also seeing how it doesn't seem right for siblings to call the elder sister "Big Sister" in a direct conversation in an English environment, "Onee-chan" would be a good compromise.

After thinking about this while typing the comment up, I think "Onee-san" would be even better, to express the slight loss of love but the best thing is to see how their relationship and dialogue plays out in the future before making any changes.

  29. guys guys, stop replying to the obvious troll.

  30. >stop replying to the obvious troll

I am genuinely offended by ch10. If I want panty humor I could watch fumoffu instead, ain't? Why is Ms. Amano doing this after establishing a rather solid standard with ARIA?

That girl is a typical school bully in ch10, making up a feeble excuse to beat up people, so so why not call her big sister? BTW, does she and bro' have names proper?

Thirdly if translated, then it should be tranlated fully. Call me a a purist, but I don't even consider the italian ARIA a dub, since the songs were not translated, it's more like voiceover.

    ReplyDelete
  31. sugoi story aniki. firstly just from reading your complaints, it's clear your grasp of "english" is quite questionable, so god know why you're even nitpicking over this. Secondly the TL's have already explained why we keep honourifics - we just assume the readers aren't entirely ignorant and have some understanding of Japanese culture. Directly translating honourfics is awkward and horrible english, leaving them out means you're losing context within the translation.

Basically, I'm not changing this ever, if you don't like it learn japanese, read the raws, and please, I implore you to stop downloading our shitty horrible translations. also 4/10 troll, slightly annoyed ^___^

  34. Aria s01ep04 as a documentary feature?

  35. Sometimes it is difficult to guess the cell order in a manga, because they do it opposite to the usual western-style layout. Usually, but not always and it is easy to get confused.

Sometimes you can't even guess who said what, even when reading a scanlation, because the bubbles often appear detached from the characters.

Is it possible to put tiny sequence numbers in the bottom left corner of individual cells, so that people know what follows what within a given page?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well, I am not offended by that "Oneechan", but I think she is indeed a bit off for an Amano character, considering how violent she is. Using club gear is hardly any reason to beat anybody, especially since Futaba and Pikari put the stuff back properly (heck, at least they weren't thieves).

"Ane-san" is a bit weird when addressing a girl, sister or not. It's best to use "oneesan". It does share the same kanji with "oneechan", but of course the hiragana for the honorific is different.

    ReplyDelete
  37. HAHAHA This chapter is hilarious, Ah, this lighten my mood. Thank you very much for sharing. ^o^

    ReplyDelete
  38. "Ane-san" gives the feeling like she's a gang leader of some sorts... ahaha. Probably not too far off the truth, though

  39. hello and thanks for the chapters.. i stop reading amanchu at chapter 4 long ago, and just started to read the rest of them recently...

BTW (i've been wanting to ask this for a while actually) aria's chapter 48... does the title really say "traghetto"?? cuz in the released manga in my country it said "target" (i think it's kind of follow the topic of the chapter... the girls target to be a prime and one just want to operate the traghetto and so on..). and i not really sure if the publisher made a mistake on it, cuz they do use the word 'traghetto' for the rest of that chapter..

soo..which one is wrong on this??

    ReplyDelete
  40. Tamas Feher from HungarySeptember 27, 2009 at 4:28 AM

Traghetto, also known as "barcheta a massoche" is the name of gondola ferry on the Grand Canal in Venice. It's an old word, already mentioned in Shakes-peare's Othello.

(That's why many think the bard was actually Edward de Vere, Earl of Oxford, publishing under a pseudonym. He was a rich aristocrat who in Venice for a year and knew everything about northern Italy by heart.

The lower-middle class citizen and amateur actor William Shakespeare of Stratford never travelled and simply could not have known enough about Italy.)

    ReplyDelete
  41. Just checked my Japanese manga - Ch48 is indeed titled as "Traghetto".

    ReplyDelete
  42. ".... I don't even consider the italian Aria a dub, since the songs were not translated...." probably it's true, but it's the best choice in our country. Has anybody seen the italian opening/ending of anime series on tv? Very often the songs are totally different from the originals and the videos are made with pieces of the series put togheter. However this generally happens with the series for children on tv and not for those for the anime-fans market.

    ReplyDelete
  43. If I compile a set of suggestions for improvement of the Aria gondola game (my ideas and input from an actual gondolier), will Yuuta-san and Shila be able to read them?

    ReplyDelete
  44. >>> Why PS2 I don't know, when PS3 has been out for about 3 years or so?

Think about the development costs. Why go through all that trouble of developing a PS3 game for a simple visual novel?

    ReplyDelete
  45. PS2 IS still more successful than the PS3, so shifting all games to the PS3 will take QUITE A BIT.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Starting 2009 october 3rd, italian dubbed Aria will be airing again, this time on the RAI4 TV. It's strange, because Rai4 is an action-oriented TV, they had Code Geass previously.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Aria Uploader's back!
    http://aria.tinybooru.com

    ReplyDelete
  48. Great news, but it must be an old backup reloaded, because many drawings and photos are missing, compared to the last days of IPYO.

    ReplyDelete
  49. We have a full backup, but everything needs to be manually uploaded and tagged so it'll take quite some time to get it all back up, feel free to help out with the older images, tag properly!

    ReplyDelete
  50. There was one big problem with IPYO: images were not separated according to official and fanfic origin. I think this is a more basic level than tags and quite important, because fanfic is often horribly poorly drawn, but that's not immediately obvious from the tiny listing thumbnails.

Hentai, XXX and perverted imagery should also be separated and not shown by default, only if one clicks "I'm 18+". Why people draw ARIA XXX, anyhow?

    ReplyDelete
  51. I beg to differ for fanfic/fanart.

Pixiv ftw. Pixiv plugin even more so.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I guess Foxy's site is for gaijin like us. Although pixiv pwns.

Foxy is taking extra effort and tagging "official" this time round.

    ReplyDelete
  53. ano... sory... it seems that the link is broken? i cant download the file...

sorry to bother.. thanks so much for this chapter! ^^
