Some nice people have also done a bit of stuff via the blogs commenting system, so I'd thought I'd link it with the post.

A translation of an ARIA doujin (sfw) - the mood is a little depressing but it's pretty well done.
Dear Akari-sama
Original source: http://paricross.sakura.ne.jp/aria/aria1/a-000.html

Also the previously translated Perfect Guide book special navigations have also had a version 2 release:
Aria the Animation Perfect Guide Book Omake Manga v2
Aria the Natural Perfect Guide Book Omake Manga v2
Aria the Origination Perfect Guide Book Special Navigation v2

  3. I spotted a mistake. It's "principal", not "principle".

And what is it with Amano and creepy cats? Couldn't she at least try to make them a bit cuter? She's such a great artist otherwise.

  5. This season in anime is quite a disappointment and there is definitely no worthy heiress of Aria. Some propose Croisee, but I disagree. Usagi Doroppu is super depressing, yet it makes more sense than Croisee, as of now.

  6. Does the principal calls Advisor Tea Aria or is it a mistake? Thanks for releasing this! Love Amanchu and Aria

  7. Random ARIA trivia: Ms. Amano probably has not been to Scothland or not for a long time. Cait Sith, the cat king fairy does exist in mythology, but it isn't described as gigantic.

The large size, as big as two oxen, is attributed to "Cu Sith" instead, whih is a giant hound dog haunting scottish highlands.

  9. Since today's Croisee ep04 was titled Mizu Akari, I fully expected Yunichi Sato to put at least one ARIA related easter egg in it, but there was none. (Unless one considers the older of the two blond bimbos a copy of Alicia Florence.)

  10. Thanks for these releases.

Just a small thing though: Aria the Origination pg 154 centre panel at the bottom of the page.

Wouldn't it sound better (in English) if Ai said "Going full speed in the wrong direction." as opposed to "Going full speed in the wrong way." Weirdly enough, my brain corrected it while reading, and it took a couple of seconds to realise why it seem strange...

Either way, thanks for translating Amano's work.

  12. In the above mentioned ARIETTA slideshow there is a slide numbered 22/89, with the in-frame marking C-47, see here:

It has just a little kanji written about the building that supposedly reflects on the water right behind the ARIA company pier-house.

I wonder if that little text could shed some lighton the exact location of ARIA company's headquarters? Sorrowfully it is really small text and the image resolution is not high and I know zero japanese. Thanks in advance, Tamas Feher from Hungary.

  13. All I can make out is "reflection" + ri + unreadable character + mi

Then there's "koraniu" in katakana, followed by two unreadable scribbles. Uh... does that help?

  14. Hello All, I have manually clicked through Google Plus Picasa to download all the 89 Arietta sketches in 1600px high resolution. Here is the package for download (app. 22MB sized):

    http://www.mediafire.com/?b2g2g8tq5qiachw

And this is what the creator of those background slides, frenchman Thomas Romain had to say about his work in this webforum:

    http://www.catsuka.com/interf/forum/viewtopic.php?p=381267#p381267

As I understand, that's 映り込みユラユラで (utsurikomi yurayura de) which means more or less "background reflection slowly swaying". Basically, it's to mark that part is the reflection on the sea, therefore slowly swaying.

  16. Diary of Sayaka O'Hara (Alicia Florence) on the third Athena Glory memorial day (2011.8.4)

  17. I wonder if the ARIA the OVA Arietta story has ever been released in magna format? I think not. However, now that all Arietta background art is available in hi-res, maybe an unofficial, but perfect manga version could be created according to the fanfic or doujin method?

    ReplyDelete
  18. Weird: ARIA anime director Junichi Sato is now staring a new robot mecha (!) series titled "Mortal Metal", despite his long background with girl superheroes, like Sailor Moon S1, Tutu, Kaleido Star, ARIA and Marin's Sea Story.

I remember he mentioned in some press interview 2 years ago wanting to try something different, like bad girl heroines. Maybe the less than stellar result of Croisee anime made him switch?

    ReplyDelete
  19. Junichi Sato also directed Tamayura, which is quite a cute story, and which was the main cause for me to visit Takehara when I was in Japan. Will he still be directing the TV series then which will come out in October?

    ReplyDelete
  20. @Motormind: Yes, he is. He is also directing a new sunrise show "Phi Brain", about solving puzzles, which makes me excited because I love to give my brain a good workout (which is also why I like TLing so much, I guess).

Also, the recent episodes of Croisee had so much subtlety, I'm really digging it now.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yeah. I wonder what the "less than stellar result" refers to. Does Croisee get bad ratings?

    ReplyDelete
  22. > Motormind: I wonder what the "less than stellar result" refers to. Does Croisee get bad ratings?

This summer season everything gets bad rating on japanese TV polls. The Obon period anime viewership figures, all like 1.something%, were especially miserable. Considered a weak season.

Mawaru will likely get a 2nd season because it's so weirdly hip and uber-kawaii UD will also likely survive for a 2nd season due to her good (6k+) BD disk pre-order figures. Croisee? Maybe if the sponsor holds fast, cause it costs a lot.

However, Croisee has big problems beyond that. First of all, more and more commenters mention it lacks a plot and is desperately in need of a plot, because it is currently meaningless and the 11/12 run is almost over.

Simply said Croisee's protagonist, Yune is an out-of-place artifact and viewers have no hope to understand why she is in Paris and what was the aim of those who sent/brought her to Paris. All plausible theories verge on the nasty.

The other major issue is that Yune isn't cute or interesting at all when pitted against two blonde divas, to the extent she has became just support character for the Blanche-Claudel family love feud for the last 3-4 episodes.

Apparently the director has no idea where the Croisee show is going, even though it would be Junichi Sato's official task to supervise the director! (Although I must mention I think he didn't know where he was going with his own Tamayura either.) Something is off.

    ReplyDelete
  23. @Tamas: Well, plots are written before shows get made, so I don't think the director has any say over that. And plot-less anime are not really unheard of. ARIA didn't have much of a plot either.

But the last few years I noticed this trend of really good shows getting pretty bad ratings. For instance, I am still not over my surprise that Aoi Hana will not get a second season. It seems nowadays the Japanese public is mostly interested in either ultra-moe fluff or just plain weirdness. Well, I guess we should be happy that at least Usagi Drop gets the recognition it deserves.

I am still fearing for poor Tamayura, even though the OVA seemed to sell well enough to justify making a TV series. Let's hope for the best!

    ReplyDelete
  24. >Motormind: ARIA didn't have much of a plot either.

ARIA does have a plot on the meta-level: the pupils want to become primas, that's why Akari got on the spaceship and there is the advancing spiral of connected undine generations. In contrast we do not understand the reasons of Yune's presence in Paris or Oscar's master plan even though the 11/12 ep Croisee run is almost over.

ARIA does not need much of a plot on the episode level, but only because it's site has been chosen carefully. (Neo-)Venezia is tiny, just 45 mins across on foot, so the story and its girls are geographically bounded and cannot wander off too much (although it does sometimes for good effect).

Compare Croisee, where Yune has been in Paris for months and speaks french, yet Claude forbids her from leaving the arcade. He didn't even took Yune on the train trip in ep10, isn't that cruel? Essentially she is a hostage. Imagine if Alicia-san told Akari on her arrival that she will practice gondola rowing in-doors.

Camille is also a hostage. The whole story is cruel, because it traps its cast, even though it takes place in a large city in a large country. What works in such a cramped cage is psychodrama, that's why the Claude-Camille story has backstaged much of everything else in the later episodes.

I think Croisee is a kind of a mental masturbation: it was made so that japanese people can admire themselves in the image of Yune-chan, the cihibi Nadeshiko Yamato, who is obedient and suffers silently. Foreign anime fans then jumped on the same bandwagon.

Regrettably Yune isn't interesting, so even the spin-off story continues in Alice, whom the japanese appear to have a crush on. Poor Yune isn't Nadeshiko Yamato, she's more like Nadesicko. Something is off with that series.

    ReplyDelete
  25. The problem with Ikoku: There are only 2 volumes of the manga, with several spin-offs. Compared to 12 (14) volumes of ARIA - and ARIA probably had more volumes published when an anime was announced.

As for Tamayura - the OVA is probably one you consider "pure iyashike" - not much in the way of plot, just d'aww. Which was amazing for me as it was the exam period, and I could have something to just enjoy after a long day of study.
The anime however, seem to be taking over the course of a whole year, so hopefully we see more of a meta-plot.

  28. Apparently someone from Japan is making an ARIA pilgrimage (now?) with photos.

    ReplyDelete
  29. The last episode of Croisee was actually pretty good. The staff had the courage to short-circuit the story in a powerful, if a bit cruel manner. CamillexClaude shippers were shot down, but ClaudexYune shippers were also ridiculized.

In this respect the finish of Croisee was better then the concluding episode of Usagi Drop, which was cowardly or better say all too convenient for an otherwise powerful and brave series.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Dear Translators,

What's your problem with the 1600px chinese raws found here?

Only the from page appears to be watermarked and it's nothing outrageous!

BTW, the railway station is full of cat president wallpapers and neo-Akari appears to have the same big fashion handbag Ai-chan carried when she relocated to Mars in the last special navigation chapter.

    ReplyDelete
  31. The watermarks are a problem, also I dislike the fact of having to use jp->ch->eng. We've used these in the past but usually (usually) jp raws turn up a few weeks later. Since we are already waiting 3 months per chapter a few more weeks shouldn't hurt for the extra quality.

IF jp raws don't turn up within a reasonable time frame I'll consider using these.

    ReplyDelete
  32. @ tamas

What railway station are you talking about?

    ReplyDelete
  33. > What railway station are you talking about?

At the beginning of Amanchu ch23, Oooki is waiting for her former classmate-girlfriends, who took the train from Tokyo (?) for a visit. The railway has some ARIA memorabilia on display.

    ReplyDelete
  34. About the Croisee ending: people who think that the staff of a show can simply short-circuit it don't really know how the process works. Animes are not the same as mangas. Shows are completely written and laid out before they are produced.

It's way too expensive to tinker with the story while you have a staff of dozens of animators getting the thing ready. That Croisee ending is as it was supposed to be from the start.

Yes, sometimes shows get pulled when they get REALLY low ratings, but that's about it.

  39. Tamayura Hitototose <-- Hitose <-- Hitotose opinions, anyone? I think ep01 is already out.

    ReplyDelete
  40. ARIA anime director Junichi Sato has fulfilled his long voiced desire to break out of the cute healing girls genre.

Sorrowfully the result, a new manga co-authored with the Macross' designer and titled "Mortal Metal" is a run-of-the-mill giant mecha story.

A girl in a super sexy outfit is tapped for her life energy to power machinery piloted by her lover (apparently both of them are servants of a mad scientist). Furthermore, other girls in the city get murdered most brutally, for reasons that are not yet known.

Why Mr. Sato decided to do that is beyond my comprehension, since there are already too many giant robot junk being made.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Maybe I overanalyse the situation, but Tamayura HTT anime ep02 appears to criticize ARIA indirectly (in the scene where the girls lament in retrospective about the exhaustive and meaningless nature of their rowing lesson).

    ReplyDelete
  42. Tamas: Hehe. That is actually pretty funny. Come to think if it, it indeed is a bit strange why learning how to row would take such a long time. It's worse when you realize that Aika and Alice grew up in Neo-Venezia and likely rowed since they were little (and why Alicia picked Akari over a local girl is anybody's guess).

Learning to navigate the canals and information about the sights is of course also necessary, but should take a few months, at most. Why the heck would it take so long to become an undine?

    ReplyDelete
  43. > Motormind wrote
    > Why the heck would it take so long to become an undine?

So that we can have 14 volumes of manga and 54 episodes of anime, of course!

    > why Alicia picked Akari over a local girl

I think she was chosen by the cats (presumably Caith Sith told Pokoteng to do so). Akari is apparently a reincarnation of that teacher from s01ep12 and maybe her cat Pete was Caith Sith?

BTW, Ai-chan used to be a gunslinger girl. She wanted to misuse Alicia's then Akari's gondola for a sniping position, but things didn't work out according to her plan.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Ok. I'm about to give up waiting for raws, I'll give it another week or two max before resorting to the chinese version.

  50. Hi thanks for all the releases so far!! I have two questions though:

    1) does this look like this romance is going to take a yuri/shoujo-ai turn anytime soon? (In your opinion, i wouldn't expect any one but the author to be able to answered with certainty)

    2) Are you still scanning this? judging from the previous comments you are just having a hard time finding the raws correct?

Thanks again for all the hard work you brighten my day with each release!

    ReplyDelete
  51. A romance in Amanchu? Sure, Hikari flirted with Futaba quite a bit in the beginning, but that was probably mere youthful exuberance. Amano seems to have mostly forgotten about it now, instead focusing on the tale of the friendship between diving club members. It's a shame, since I think Futaba and Hikari would make a cute couple, but it is unlikely that Amano will turn this into a full-blown yuri story.
