  6. Hello! Did Alicia marry the foreign trader? Does anybody know Ai-chan's full name? How much was completed of the 13 missing Aria the Origination anime episodes (besides the 5.5 on DVD)?

    Bonus:
Do you know the reason for Alicia choosing Akari as her heir? (This was asked in the Arietta OVA and left unanswered, but I think I can answer it.)

BTW, I suspect Aqua was meant to be a story about geishas, i.e. seniors (geiko) and juniors (maiko). Magazines probably refused to carry it, so the story got rewritten with a less controversial background. The whole hierarchy aspect and ethos of ARIA is rather like the Kyoto geisha community.

  7. Alicia is married to Akira.

Ai-chan's full name is Hiroko Ai the Fifth, descendant of the Hiroko Ai from Mars Trilogy.

All of them was completed, but got thrown out of the window. Actually I caught it, and only I have them, but I don't give it to you!

Alicia choose Akari, because only her name started with an "A".

Actually, Aqua was the first version of Higurashi, then got rewritten.

(For serious answers: No one knows. Except the last, that's not true, Amano-sensei is not like that.)

I think it wasn't Alicia who choose Akari, Caith Sith choose her. Caith Sith is probably Pete the cat from Aria ep 11. (Avvenire) or a descendant of Pete. It looks like Ms. Amano believes in horoscopes and such, so Akari could be a reincarnation of the lady teacher. Pokoteng-sachou is definitely cahoots with Caith Sith.

Geishas are not considered prostitutes by the japanese, they are respected there and a traditional cultural icon of some kind.

The kind of excessive perfection about undine job as seen in Aria is quite like the long training of junior maiko geishas becoming geikos and they dorm together like Alicia and Akari do at the Aria Company HQ.

Otherwise, the love of masks does link historical Venice to medieval Japan quite nicely. and there is plenty of mysteries at both places.

  9. Actually, Alicia and even Akira (much less Athena) aren't exactly as demanding that things be done exactly the same way the same time the way geisha training stresses, IIRC - so I wouldn't say that this is much like it at all... especially as Alicia doesn't LIVE at the business the way Akari does; and we know nothing about Alicia off-work except that she wears glasses and orders stuff from mail-order catalogues.

  10. Thanks for the link to 38!

"Geishas are not considered prostitutes by the japanese, they are respected there and a traditional cultural icon of some kind."

I heard that "geisha" means "artisan" in Japanese, the first geisha centuries ago were men, and geisha these days preserve old art and performance styles but a few centuries ago they made up new styles.

  11. It looks like the wind turbine lined Neo-Venezia landbridge also exists in real life:

(Maybe Aria was partly sponsored by alternative energy investors to promote the wind power theme?)
